The university was founded in 1965, as California State College. Classes were opened in 1970 and by 1982 the college was turned into a university, being named as California State University.
Today, Cal State Bakersfield has an enrolment of more than 7000 graduate and undergraduate students and offers a total of 31 bachelor’s, 22 master’s degrees and one doctoral program.
There are 90 official student clubs on campus, including 10 Greek organizations.
Athletics: The Cal State Bakersfield Roadrunners are representing the university, with the roadrunner as their mascot. The softball team has won several championships (1987, ’88, ’89 and ’90), and the sports teams compete in NCAA Division 1, covering sport areas such as basketball, swimming and diving, wrestling, soccer and volleyball.
